Thomas Rekowicz is the deuteragonist in The Medium. He was the manager of The Niwa Resort and contacted Marianne. His spirit, unlike Marianne, was more separate from his physical body and didn't always follow, causing him to have two separate personalities. Thomas, we assume, is not bound by the rule that states both realities apply to a body, because he is more two different people in the two realms that are able to communicate. Although his spirit was trapped away in Henry's world for multiple years until Marianne sent The Hound away, freeing his spirit.

Biography

According to Henry, when Thomas was three years old, the Nazis, during their invasion of Poland, captured Thomas in Warsaw. They, somehow, realized his potential for a double-reality existence, and experimented on him until he was eighteen, when it is assumed he caused them to become vegetated in their minds just like he did an a prior session to the anonymous lead scientist.

He then went "on the run", eventually settled down at Niwa where there were a number of unrelated figures who never suspected him, and became the manager. He eventually started a family, which included Lilianne and Marianne. It was when Marianne was three years old that Henry, in an interrogation, recounted his story, and set the Red House, Thomas' residence, on fire, while Lily and Marianne were inside. Lily went essentially unharmed, while Marianne entered a coma that caused amnesia. She was hospitalized, and Thomas decided to leave her there rather than continue to keep her at Niwa. At this point, Spirit Thomas entered a long imprisonment in Henry's mental world, while Thomas kept Lily in a room with salt-infused walls to keep her contained. Eventually, though, the Maw broke out, and there was no point to keep her further imprisoned. The physical Thomas' fate has too much ambiguity to assume everything, but it's unlikely he was consumed by the Maw, considering he was not mentioned in its recounting of its victims. Spirit Thomas did not feel his counterpart's presence, and it is assumed, but unconfirmed, that he was one to die to the Maw.

Personality

Thomas seems to have 2 different personalities, one being his mortal body in the material world, and his spirit in the spirit world taking on a different personality. He is also able to communicate with his spirit and have a conversation with it.

Thomas

Thomas in the material world seems to be a lot more serious and somewhat more aggressive, holding a deep amount of love for his 2 daughters, and having his spirit go in to destroy the spirits of Richard after discovering what he had been doing with his daughter, and Henry after he burned down the building she was in. At first, he also doesn't seem to hold much affection towards his spirit, only really communicating with him when he needs to like when he was searching for Richard's notebook and going so far as to build a safe room with salt that would not exist in the spirit world so he could be disconnected from his spirit and powers to be alone, which he later used when Lilianne's powers started to become unstable.

Thomas' Spirit

Thomas' spirit is a lot more cynical and humorous in comparison to Thomas, although he's not exactly kind either as seen when he didn't show a lot of remorse going after Richard and Henry's spirits. After escaping from Henry's world when Marianne sent the Hound away, he was shown to have gone through a lot in the time he was trapped, and seems to care about both of Thomas' daughters as well, as he was willing to hold off the Maw in order to let Marianne escape.

Physical description

General

Wardrobe

Spirit Thomas wears an indistinctive shirt that is ripped at the collar, showing a rough mass near his neck that is more within his skin. However, he continues to wear the same gloves that Thomas has on.

Powers and Abilities

Spirit Thomas - Unlike Marianne, Thomas' spirit seems to have a completely separate personality to Thomas himself, being capable of acting independently from Thomas. It can also be assumed that Thomas' spirit is somewhat more powerful than Marianne, as he is able to create a spirit shield around himself without having to lift his hand in front of himself to focus on the shield; as well as being able to create a spirit shield without needing a spirit well alongside using spirit force. Although still needing a spirit well in order to perform a spirit blast, his spirit blast is somewhat more powerful as spiritual energy coats both of his arms rather than one like Marianne. It can also be noted that while Marianne's spirit and powers have a white glow to them, Thomas' spirit has an orange color when using its powers.

Spirit Shield - Thomas' spirit can create a shield around himself by using spiritual energy. This shield is used mainly as a method of parrying attacks from creatures in the spirit world, which inflict damage to the creature attacking him, as seen by when he was able to disintegrate Richard's tentacles. It can also prevent the searchlight in Henry's mind from inflicting damage to him.

Spirit Blast - Thomas' spirit can create a spirit blast similar to Marianne's by utilizing spiritual energy from a spirit well. He charges the spirit blast between both of his hand, and is capable of completely disintegrating multiple vines covering up paintings and doors in the spirit world.

Spirit Force - Thomas' spirit is able to telekinetically control objects in the spirit world, as seen when he was able to toss aside a large piles of debris while travelling through Henry's mind. Thomas' spirit force is strong enough to collapse multiple shelves to crush The Hound. Like his spirit shield, he does not require a spirit well to use this ability.

Exorcism - Thomas' spirit assumes control in the minds he invades. While in this version of the spirit world, it is filled with memories from that person's past, such as Richard's abuse at the hands of his step father, and Henry torturing people. Thomas' spirit is capable of finding the core of a person, which most commonly appears in the form of them as a child. Thomas can send away their spirit, leaving behind the more monstrous entity. After exorcising someone, they go into an irreversable vegetative state. Although, people who are evil enough, for example, Henry, are able to resist this, their center personality being their demons themselves.

Trivia

  • His pocket watch, a gift from his wife in 1776 as a 10-year anniversary gift, was seen in the end in the Spirit Realm parking lot of Niwa, and and a vague shape of Thomas was seen walking away, picking up the watch as he left with a gloved hand. It is not clear which one this was.
